Advocacy: Our role

By joining your regional CBA group you can take a positive step towards protecting your heritage. Thanks to our supporters, we are able to advocate the protection of heritage, preserving and enhancing its legacy for future generations.

How can we help?

The Council for British Archaeology West Midlands (CBAWM) comments on strategic issues, including planning policy documents and non-statutory guidance, relating to any aspect of the historic environment- archaeological remains, historic buildings and historic landscapes- within the West Midlands region (Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands county (Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall, Wolverhampton) and Worcestershire). This is in addition to the Council for British Archaeology’s national role as statutory consultee on proposals that have a substantial impact on listed buildings.

Drawing on its experience and knowledge of the region, CBAWM can suggest modifications or additions to policies and guidance to reinforce and strengthen your local authority’s stance. We can also comment on proposals for site management and public interpretation, whether or not they are the subject of a formal consultation process.

CBAWM will not normally comment on development proposals affecting individual sites, though further advice and support can be obtained from the CBA nationally, who maintain a network of correspondents, able to comment on individual cases. As a charitable organisation, the CBA actively provides guidance and assistance to protect the historic environment. We work together with government, policy makers, property owners, and other interested parties to enable sustainable solutions for the historic environment.
